Class #4

We will be making an earth-colored still life. Expect to use colors such as greens, browns (siennas, umbers) and yellows, as well as white and black. Make sure you bring a canvas or canvas board and plenty of rags! (Did I mention plenty of rags????)

Class on Thursday, Feb. 18

Don't forget we have class this THURSDAY!!! Bring a blank canvas if you think you will finish the gradation still life early. Also, you'll need earth colors for the next assignment: raw sienna or yellow ocher, burnt sienna, burnt umber and raw sienna (optional). You'll also need your white and black, and it wouldn't hurt to have cadmium red and cadmium yellow as well.

Introduction: This course will explores painting at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. Students will be divided into groups and will work on assignments or continue pursuing their individual directions. Some basic instruction on learning "to see" will be given to beginners, as necessary. If you are an intermediate or advanced student, you should bring in examples of previous work, as well as ideas you wish to work on. It is always best to work from real life, but you may work from your own photographs. Do not work from reproductions, calendars or magazine illustrations if at all possible.

Attendance and Lateness: Attendance is mandatory. There is no substitute for working and participating in class. Three absences are grounds for a failing grade.

Please be on time. Class begins promptly at 6 p.m. Two tardies will be counted as one absence. If you will have an ongoing scheduling conflict, please discuss it with me at the beginning of the semester.

Grading: Individual grades will be given for each painting and averaged to make up 90% of your grade. Class participation will count for another 10%.

Supplies: Materials and supplies for this class are expensive, but there is no overpriced textbook to buy! We will discuss how to approach buying the materials the first class. You must come prepared to work every week, with all the materials you need. Do not expect other students to lend you paint, brushes and canvases!!!

Bring small canvas or canvasboard no bigger than 9 x 12", palette, brushes, rags, turpenoid, brush cleaner and all your colors

Bring canvas or canvasboard at least 14 x 18", palette, brushes, rags, turpenoid, brush cleaner and all your colors

A glass container or two to store your turpenoid. It needs to have a lid and be labeled with your name.
Paint: Oil is preferable; for acrylics, see me.
37 ml tubes or bigger of :
Cadmium Red Medium
Cadmium Orange or Cadmium Orange Hue

Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Permanent Green Light

150 ml tube:
Titanium White
Extra Colors: Dioxazine Purple, Cobalt Blue, Pthalo Blue, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Terre Verte Green, Permanent Red (Medium). Any other colors that attract you are also fine.
Solvent: Quart of Turpenoid or Turpenoil. No turpentine or other solvents.
Brushes: Get no less than 4 brushes--long handles. Get different sizes and kinds.
Better to buy medium to expensive brushes--cheap ones will not perform well or last very long.
Palette: Disposable 12 x 16” tear-off palettes are easiest to use in class.
Palette Knife: One or more bent palette knives would be useful
Support: Stretched canvases are best (12 x 16”, 16 x 20”, 20 x 22” are good sizes.) Canvas boards are okay, but not as permanent. You’ll need about 5 canvases.
Rags: LOTS OF THEM. Paper towels are nice, too. Lots of them, as well.
Optional Extras: Linseed oil/Stand Oil/Damar Varnish
