MUSEUM TRIP THIS SUNDAY

If you want to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with me, meet in the main foyer at noon on Sunday, April 22. We will tour some of the painting collections for approximately 1-1 1/2 hours.

Your paper is due on May 9, 2018.

MUSEUM ASSIGNMENT

-->
Students need to visit a museum and look at paintings. (If you want to join us as a group, the class is meeting on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at noon in the Main Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will be looking at the collection and then go to lunch in the cafeteria downstairs.)

Other possible museums to visit are as follows: The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The Guggenheim Museum, The Rubin Museum, The Neue Gallery, The Bronx Museum of Art, The Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor, The Brooklyn Museum, The Queens Museum, The Frick Collection. Very often your CUNY ID will get you in for free, so bring it along. Obtain proof of your attendance (a receipt or ticket stub) and include it with your paper.

This paper will count the equivalent of one painting towards your semester grade.

View the paintings at the museum of your choice and choose TWO that relate in some way to each other. It could be subject matter, style, period, etc. Record who the artists are and list the dates they were made, medium, etc. Take a picture of each, and include them with your paper (no flash used of course).

Write a description of each painting and then compare and contrast them. How are they similar? How are they different? What things were the artists trying to communicate? What is the subject matter? Theme? Mood? What can you infer from looking at the works? Describe the composition. What are the art elements and principles you notice? (line, shape, color, texture, pattern, light and dark, volume, balance, rhythm, symmetry, asymmetry, etc.)

This should be at least two pages, double-spaced, type-written.
