Hi all. Professor Healy here. I am sick today and can't come to class. As a precaution, I am also canceling our Sunday trip to the Met Museum, as I am not sure whether I will be better by then. I plan on rescheduling it for the following Sunday, the 10th. (You can also go on your own at any time.)
We will make up the class in December during finals week.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Museum Paper Assignment
Arts 161/262/263 Museum Trip Assignment, Due 11/20/2019
Students need to visit a museum and look at paintings. (If you want to join us as a group, the class is meeting on November 3, 2019 at noon in the Main Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We will be looking at the collection and then go to lunch in the cafeteria downstairs.) Be on time as we will stay in the Main Hall no later than 12:15!
Understand that I am not requiring you to come to the museum with me…you can go to a museum on your own.
Other museums you might visit are as follows: The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The Guggenheim Museum, The Rubin Museum, The Neue Gallery, The Bronx Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Queens Museum, The Frick Collection. Very often your CUNY ID will get you in for free, so bring it along. Obtain proof of your attendance (a receipt or ticket stub) and include it with your paper, if you do not come with me.
This paper will count the equivalent of one painting towards your semester grade.

View the paintings at the museum of your choice and choose TWO that relate in some way to each other. It could be subject matter, style, period, etc. Record who the artists are and list the dates they were made, medium, etc. If possible, take a picture of each, and include them with your paper (no flash used, of course).
Write a description of each painting and then compare and contrast them. How are they similar? How are they different? What things were the artists trying to communicate? What is the subject matter? Theme? Mood? What can you infer from looking at the works? Describe the composition. What are the art elements and principles you notice? (line, shape, color, texture, pattern, light and dark, volume, balance, rhythm, symmetry, asymmetry, etc.)
This should be at least two pages, double-spaced, type-written.
